AFHQ PERSONNEL SENSITISED ON BREAST CANCER

The Religious Affairs Directorate of the  Air Force Headquarters in  collaboration with the Public Health Division of the  37 Military Hospital has organised a comprehensive lecture and screening on breast cancer for personnel at the Air Force Headquarters (AFHQ) on Thursday, 24 October 2024.

The Resource Person from the 37 Military Hospital, Ms. Baaba Quansimaa delivered an impactful lecture on the importance of breast cancer awareness, early detection, stigma eradication, and preventive measures.  She stressed on the need for regular screening and self-examination and gave great insights into the risks and symptoms of breast cancer to empower personnel with knowledge that could save lives.

She stated that, breast cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the breast tissues when the cells in the breast begin to grow uncontrollably forming a tumor that can be felt as a lump or detected through imaging tests and advised both men and women to undergo regular screening as all are at risk of developing the cancer.

She outlined some signs of breast cancer development which included discharge from the breast, unpleasant smell after the discharge, unusual rashes around the breast and changes in the size of the breast. These signs are to be reported immediately when noticed and not be  treated by self-medication, she added.

Following the informative session, participants were offered the opportunity to undergo breast screening reinforcing the message that early detection screening is crucial in increasing survival rates of those affected by the disease.

The initiative aligns with global efforts to combat breast cancer and underscores the commitment of the Ghana Air Force and  the  37 Military Hospital to ensure the wellbeing of personnel.
