AIR FORCE CUSTOMS & TRADITIONS

Wing Presentation Ceremony

Pilot wings, also known as aviator wings is an insignia used in most of the world’s militaries to mark out troops who have received training and qualification in military aviation. It provides the means to outwardly distinguish between pilots and other professionals of the ground force in the military. The Ghana Air Force Wing is worn by qualified aircrew on the left breast above all medal ribbons.

Flypast

A flypast is a ceremonial flight of aircraft past a group of spectators or place. It is usually conducted at low heights where it can be observed by people as the aircraft fly in formation. Over the years, this has been a standing tradition where the GHF is tasked to conduct these maneuvers during major events within the country.

Colours

The origin of carrying ‘colours’ dates back to history when a man fixed his family badge to a pole and held it aloft in battle for dual purpose of indicating his position and act as a rallying point should the occasion arise. Although Colours are solely for ceremonial purposes these days, they remain a symbol of the regimental pride, honour and dignity to foster espirit de corps to inspire successive generations to keep the flag flying.
