6 GARRISON OBSERVES BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
The 6 Garrison on Friday, 31 October 2025, organised a commemorative event to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The activity brought together personnel from the Headquarters Northern Command, Air Force Base Tamale, 69 Airborne Force, 6 Infantry Battalion and the 93 Signal Regiment.

Held concurrently at Camp Nyohini and Barwah Barracks, the event aimed to deepen awareness and promote the early detection of the disease. At Camp Nyohini, participants were drawn from Headquarters Northern Command, 6 Infantry Battalion, and the 93 Signal Regiment, while personnel from Air Force Base Tamale and 69 Airborne Force converged at Barwah Barracks for the programme.

The commemoration began with a health walk through the principal streets of the metropolis to heighten public consciousness about breast cancer and underscore the importance of early reporting and regular medical check-ups. Medical officers from the 6 Medical Reception Station (6 MRS) and the Airborne Force Medical Centre, who spearheaded the programme, later delivered an educational session focusing on breast cancer prevention and management.

Highlights of the educational session included, the warning signs, treatment options, and lifestyle choices that help reduce vulnerability to the disease. Participants were also guided through practical breast self-examination techniques, after which a screening exercise was conducted for all attendees.

Speaking at Camp Nyohini on behalf of the Garrison Commander, Air Commodore Nana Adu-Gyamfi, the Command Operations Officer, Colonel John Yaw Kwarteng, emphasised the importance of prioritising personal health as a foundation for operational readiness. He urged personnel and their families to take advantage of screening opportunities and help demystify breast cancer through education and open conversations.

At the Barwah Barracks location of the event, Wing Commander Divine Akoto, Commanding Officer of the Number 2 Transport Wing, also urged personnel and their families to prioritise early breast cancer screening and commended organisers for championing awareness within the military community. The observance formed part of the 6 Garrison’s ongoing efforts to promote health consciousness and encourage proactive healthcare practices among personnel and the wider community.
