GAF HOLDS GENDER POLICY IMPLEMENTATION SEMINAR

A high-level seminar on the implementation of the Ghana Armed Forces Gender Policy was held at Burma Camp on Thursday, 9 October 2025. Centred on the theme, ‘From Policy to Practice’, the event aimed to institutionalise gender mainstreaming in the Ghana Armed Forces.

 

 

Speaking at the event, the Gender Policy Advisor to the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Group Captain Theodora Agornyo, commended the Military High Command for the continuous support towards the advancement of gender initiatives within the Armed Forces. She noted that the progress made in gender mainstreaming, particularly in administration and logistics, reflects the institution’s growing commitment to fairness, equal opportunities, and inclusiveness. She added that effective implementation at all levels would achieve meaningful impact.

 

 

Group Captain Agornyo outlined key gender mainstreaming milestones achieved over the past five years, including gender-sensitive budgeting and resource allocation, spousal pension reforms, and ongoing gender mainstreaming education. She also highlighted the achievements and challenges encountered, stressing the need for sustained commitment and collaboration across all ranks.

 

 

In his address, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, expressed appreciation to the organisers and all participants for their dedication to advancing gender equality in the GAF. He applauded the Service Chiefs and Gender Advisors for the good work done so far in promoting awareness and supporting the implementation of gender-related initiatives.

 

 

The CDS emphasised that achieving gender mainstreaming is a shared responsibility which requires collective effort; hence, he pledged his full support for all gender mainstreaming activities and urged all personnel to work together towards a common goal of creating an inclusive, respectful, and professional Armed Forces.

 

 

The seminar also featured brief presentations from the Service Chiefs and Gender Advisors of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Each provided updates on progress, challenges, and strategic plans to advance gender policy implementation within their respective Services.

 

 

 

A special presentation was also delivered by the consultant and a Senior Lecturer at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Dr Anna Naa Adotsoo Mensah.  She enumerated the strategic objectives of gender mainstreaming, the annual deliverables from 2025 to 2029 and the proposed budget for the same period. Dr Mensah also highlighted the critical considerations for the successful implementation of the plan.
