A welcome reception was held for renowned Japanese engineer and astronaut, Koichi Wakata (PhD), at the Air Force Officers’ Mess on Wednesday, 16 September 2026.

The reception, hosted by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong, brought together officials from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Japanese Embassy and the University of Ghana.

Dr Koichi Wakata is a veteran astronaut with over 33 years of experience in human space activities and is recognised as a leader in the global space community. His extensive experience in space exploration and engineering provided a platform for discussions on opportunities for cooperation in aviation and aerospace-related fields.

During the interaction, the participants explored possible avenues for collaboration aimed at bridging the gap between academia, aviation and aerospace engineering.

The discussions highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships among academic institutions, technical experts and the aviation sector to promote knowledge exchange, innovation and professional development.

The engagement underscores the Ghana Air Force’s interest in exploring opportunities that connect academic knowledge with aviation and aerospace engineering, while fostering relationships with international partners and institutions.
