The Ministry of Defence has unveiled a cenotaph in honour of the late former Minister for Defence, Honourable Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah on Thursday 6 August 2026 as part of activities marking the first anniversary of the tragic Z-9 helicopter crash.

Unveiling the cenotaph, the President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, described the occasion as a reaffirmation of the nation's gratitude to a devoted patriot whose life was dedicated to the service of Ghana.

He noted that the ceremony was not merely the unveiling of a monument but a celebration of values that Dr Omane Boamah embodied throughout his public life. President Mahama praised the late former Defence Minister for serving with diligence, humility and unwavering commitment to the security and stability of the Republic.

He further extended the government's deepest sympathies to the bereaved families, friends and colleagues of the deceased, expressing hope that they would find comfort in knowing that their sacrifices would never be forgotten.

In his remarks, the Acting Minister for Defence, Honourable Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, described the ceremony as a national affirmation that a life of service, integrity and patriotism should never fade from the nation's memory.

He said the cenotaph would stand as a lasting symbol of gratitude to a leader whose vision, humility and unwavering commitment strengthened the Ministry of Defence and the Ghana Armed Forces.

The Deputy Minister for Defence, Honourable Ernest Brogya Genfi, also paid tribute to the late former Minister, describing him as an exemplary public servant whose dedication to national development left an indelible mark on the nation.

He stressed that honouring distinguished citizens who served faithfully reinforces the values upon which national institutions are built.

Honourable Brogya Genfi further remembered the seven other victims who perished alongside Dr Omane Boamah in the Z-9 helicopter crash: Honourable Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Dr Samuel Sarpong, Mr Samuel Aboagye, Wing Commander Peter Bafemi Anala, Flight Lieutenant Manaen Twum Ampadu and Flight Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

As part of the commemorative ceremony, the Ministry of Defence also launched a special edition of The Defender magazine dedicated to preserving and celebrating the life, leadership and enduring legacy of Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah.
