AFHQ PERSONNEL SENSITISED ON CERVICAL CANCER AWARENESS.
A team from the Duala Medical Centre in Burma Camp has held an event aimed to educate personnel of the Air Force Headquarters on the causes, symptoms, prevention and treatment of cervical cancer, emphasising on the importance of early detection on Thursday 30 January 2025 at the Air Force Headquarters, Burma Camp.
In a lecture delivered by Dr Ewura Adjoa Ahimah Nunoo, the Senior Medical Officer in charge of the Duala Medical Centre, she highlighted on the significance of regular screenings, early detection, and the role of vaccination in preventing cervical cancer.
According to Dr Nunoo, 5000 cervical cancer cases are reported annually in Ghana and 99% of these cases are linked to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which is contracted through sexual intercourse and other risk factors.
She further stated that, some of the symptoms of cervical cancer is irregular menstrual cycle, weight loss, bleeding in between periods, dyspareunia, post-menopausal bleeding, fatigue and bleeding after sexual intercourse.
She however gave a detailed explanation on how cervical cancer could be diagnosed, treated and prevented through the pap smear test, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, vaccination in three doses for it to be effective and including the ABC approach, which is Abstinence, Being faithful and Condom use.
Dr Nunoo used the opportunity to encourage young girls and older women to get screened regularly and get vaccinated once they test negative for HPV, she said, when cervical cancer is detected early, it is more treatable compared to the late stages.
